Amazon to release Android tablet and App Store?

Amazon & Android

Amazon & Android

Amazon are stirring up quite a haze around their involvement with Android at the moment. Sure, the Amazon Kindle application for Android has been around for a while now, but we’ve recently learned Amazon might launch their own App Store for Android too. To become a developer for this Amazon App Store you have to pay a fee of $99 and Amazon will pay you a royalty equal to the greater of 70% of the purchase price or 20% of the List Price as of the purchase date. What is most interesting comes next…

It has subsequently been alleged that Amazon may release their very own tablet based device. This device will presumably run Android too because of the App Store that they have just announced. Sure, this isn’t a given, but it would be surprising if Amazon stuck to their own software like they did for the Kindle (which runs a Linux-2.6.10 based platform). The rumor is borne out of information from TechCrunch, so head on over there if you want to read it form the horses mouth.

Amazon Setting Sights On Android App Store, Followed By Tablet?

The folks over at TechCrunch received a few tips that suggests that Amazon may be looking in to launching their own Android app store and that they might possibly be looking at launching their own Android tablet.

A tipster provided a few details of the Amazon app store which include:

  • For each sale of an App, we will pay you a royalty equal to the greater of 70% of the purchase price or 20% of the List Price as of the purchase date (70/30 is standard, this 20/80 split is somewhat odd and confusing)

  • The List Price is apparently in place so that you can’t sell your app cheaper on other “similar services” — meaning other app stores, presumably

  • The “similar services” should also include the forthcoming Chrome Web Store, if I’m reading this correctly

  • There is a $99 fee to be a developer in this program (the same as Apple’s iOS developer program)

  • It seems like if your app is available on other platforms, you have to make sure to update it at the same time on Amazon’s store that you do in any other store (this will piss off a lot of developers)

  • Apps will have to be laced with Amazon DRM — meaning they will only work on devices they approve (obviously)

  • Amazon has the right to pull any app for any reason (obviously)

  • Apps can also be shown on amazon.com (this is up to Amazon)

  • You can offer free apps

  • The app store is U.S.-only (at least for now)

  • This part is interesting too: “We have sole discretion to determine all features and operations of this program and to set the retail price and other terms on which we sell Apps.”

TechCrunch is also reporting from a tipster that Amazon is planning on launching tablet as they has been working on hardware separate from the Kindle and judging by this Android app store, this future tablet could be Android powered. Amazon has the power and finances to create a nice Android tablet, so lets hope this tablet rumor doesn’t bust.

What are your thoughts on these separate app stores? After seeing what they have done with the Kindle, would you consider an Android tablet if the price was right?
