A smartphone should at least offer a proper way to access Office files, regardless whether its only opening a Word or Excel file, or offering exhaustive editing capabilities. While we still don’t know whether Google will provide that functionality themselves with an offline version of Google Docs, at least one developer has the software in place: QuickOffice.
Just like the existing QuickOffice versions for PalmOS, Symbian S60, and Symbian UIQ, the Android version will allow users to view and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.
QuickOffice, Inc. showed a prototype of the software to Sascha Segan, an editor of PC Magazine. According to Segan, the software “looks ready for phones on the new platform - whenever they might appear”. QuickOffice for Android will also include a bonus function, compared to the existing versions: it will be able to access online Google Docs, and documents stored on home pcs through the internet. QuickOffice collaborated with SoonR to accomplish the remote functionality.
