An executive for T-Mobile USA has confirmed that the operator will introduce an Android-based smartphone in the fourth quarter of this year. Joe Sims, who is head of the broadband and new business division at T-Mobile, says that he is impressed with the prototypes he has seen. Sims couldn’t, however, give any specific details about the device(s) other than saying that it is consumer-oriented.
Samsung, LG and HTC are all working on Android phones, but it remains to be seen which one will be the first on the market. According to Sayeed Choudhury, a systems software product manager for Qualcomm, there are at least five Android-based smartphone in development that will run on Qualcomm chips.
Earlier this year, T-Mob’s CEO Hamid Akhavan talked about the operators interest in Android-based smartphones, but he didn’t clarify whether he was talking about Europe or the US. Other mobile operators are also eyeing Google’s mobile operating system.
